End of Somnath Chatterji

After the debacle in the Parliament yesterday many MP’s have been removed from their parties because of violation of their party rules and regulations. This includes the Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterji. He was formally removed from CPM because he refused to step down as the Speaker of the House. The left parties were the ones who were responsible for this trust vote by withdrawing its support for Manmohan Singh’s government because of the nuclear deal issue. The left were opposing the Prime Minister right from the beginning against the nuclear deal. But the government was adamant in its views of going ahead with deal. Because of this conflict the left withdrew its support for the government. CPM asked Somnath Chatterji to resign from the Speaker post before the trust vote. But he refused to do so and remain as the Speaker of the House. Therefore he was removed from the party.
